Young Archbishop Ambrose sets out on a religious mission to remote lands inhabited by pagans. Accompanying the pastor are Hieromonk Kiriyak and two reindeer herders: Stepan, a baptized monk, and Garpuni, a pagan. During a difficult and dangerous journey across vast, snow-covered lands, Ambrose miraculously survives: he is saved by one of his guides. This tragic event profoundly impacts the priest and forces him to change his worldview.
